Obsessed With Covers #32: Masquerade, The Republic of Thieves, Masks and Shadows

Y'all know how much I love a pretty cover. I think about...40% of the books that end up on my shelves (be they physical or digital) do so because of the covers. Call me shallow but you have to admit that a pretty, shiny cover will catch your eye faster than a dull, boring one. Two, simple rules that I'll follow:

  • 1, 2 or 3 (no more than 3, though) covers per week;
  • books should be new-ish; no more than 2 years old.
Oh, before I share the covers that made me drool or want to stare at them for hours and hours, I have to say something. This is a semi-original idea. Why semi? Because almost every book blogger has something similar. The only thing I came up with was the title. If by any chance there's another blogger with a similar feature with the same title, I assure you I'm not stealing your idea. I'm just THAT bad with titles. Believe me, I'd love to be smarter and have a witty name for this feature, but I don't. So, no copyright infringement/theft/steal or anything of the sort was desired. All I can say is sorry :P

Tomorrow the Venice Carnival ends and I thought it would be good idea if I went searching for some carnival inspired covers out there. I found a few gorgeous, gorgeous ones that I'm very happy to share with you.

There's something about the full mask that makes this cover very mysterious. I love the fact that I can't be sure if that's a woman or a man behind the mask. I also love that there's no color on the mask at all, highlighting the cover model's gorgeous blue eyes. And I like that the mask is bigger than Rialto bridge's silhouette. I want to know what secret the model hides, I want to know why the mask is needed. I assume there's something revolving around her/his identity, maybe they did something terrible in the past or maybe they just hide from their family's legacy. Simply put, I want to know everything there is to know about this person and their secrets

Marquerade - Melissa de la Cruz

The fact that this cover features one of the most famous Venetian masks is why I noticed it in the first place. I also can't help but notice that despite the title, it seems like the masked woman either just killed someone or barely escaped a brutal fight. Either way, I love the contrast between her black clothes and bloody swords, and the pristine red robes of the man behind her. It seems, in a way, that she's protecting him at all costs, while he hides behind her, plotting. The foggy background makes me think that this idea of someone plotting isn't too far off (I always think someone plans something entirely evil on a foggy day. Foggy days are creepy to me, okay?). I also can't help but notice that the cover isn't similar to the other covers from this series (bummer!). But the cover is gorgeous and I want to know what the series is about.

The Republic of Thieves - Scott Lynch

I love the colored smoke. Despite the mask, the smoke is the first thing I noticed. Plus, the violet and blue combination of colors, which is one of my favorite color combo ever. The one thing that I can't get past though is the fact that not only is the person wearing a mask to conceal their identity, they also have their eyes closed. So you really have no idea who is behind that mask, not even a tiny clue. I'm also intrigued by the curtains, which made me think about the opera or a theater. So I get the sense that this person is really powerful, influential, but also someone that is controlling things from behind the scenes if that makes sense. Also, I love how the "shadows" from the title are around the person, while the building almost has a spotlight on it. I'm very curious about the book, now.

So, here are the prettiest covers I've seen this week.

Little known fact about me: I love guitars. Probably more than I love coffee and chocolate combined. I know, it sounds impossible to love something more than those two things, but it's true. Which is exactly why this cover caught my eye. The second thing that made me love this cover is the use of water and fire. I love that at the center is a guitar, making it clear that the instrument plays a very significant role in this battle, whatever that is.

Collide - H.M. Ward

I absolutely love this cover! Growing up, one of my favorite Disney movies was Sleeping Beauty. Besides the fact that Aurora had three fairy godmothers, Maleficent had a pet raven. A RAVEN! Which is 80% the reason why I love this cover so much. I also like the colors used on this cover. I'm curious about this book too, because I wonder how exactly the story will change and how not waking Aurora up will affect the story. The thing is, I love how the green smoke is concentrated around her head area, which is really interesting. And her eyes are open, but I have a feeling that she's not able to see anything, really. So I am definitely curious about this book

Hey guys! Happy Monday! Sorry I went missing last week, but I had some stuff going on. This week I'm bringing you Urban Fantasy covers.

The beauty of this cover stands in its simplicity. The POV used is rather interesting, making it look like the dark night sky is the focus. There's what looks like either a bridge or the deck of a yacht/ship in the lowest part of the cover. Whatever it is, it seems like it's full of water. What hits me about this cover is that despite the title, that city has no lights that I can see. So I'm really curious about that, about the discrepancies between the title and the city shown in the cover. I love the font used for the title, I've always had a thing for neon signs. I also like that the letters "bleed" light around them. I'm actually very excited about this book, because this looks like an interesting read.

City of Light - Keri Arthur

This cover makes me think of Ghost Rider. That and the bike are what first got my attention and made me love this cover. Because bikes are awesome! I also love the sleeve tattoos the cover model has. That's a very interesting pattern and I'm very intrigued by it. I wonder if the tattoos have a story. I also like that it seems as if his powers are coming from the tattoos. I am curious about who he's chasing, because he looks ready to go to war, dangerous, angry and very, very concentrated. I have a feeling that being on his bad side is not a good place to find yourself in.

Roadside Magic - Lilith Saintcrow

Happy Monday guys! I have pretties for you!

The Raven Cycle is a series that has some of the prettiest covers out there, but the one for this upcoming novel is my favorite. The first thing that I noticed is the stag. Since I haven't yet read this series (I only stared at the pretty covers), I'm not really sure what to make of this cover. Is it that the stag has a light shining on it or is that blue shade on it a symbol for what's happening in the book? Is it fog that conceals the ravens and the stag's antlers or something else? This cover is really making me insanely curious about the series.

The Raven King - Maggie Stiefvater

I've been staring at this cover for a while now and every time I see it I think about the same thing. I don't know if you guys saw The Last Unicorn, but this cover reminds me of that movie a lot. I love the image used and I really want to know if the horse is on fire or if the horse has an armor of fire. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that the next books in this series will be similar to this one. Obviously, reading the blurb makes it seem that the horse belongs to one of the Four Horsemen, but that tagline makes me wonder. Anyway, I love horses, so this cover needs to prettify my shelves :D

Riders - Veronica Rossi

Another series with fantastic covers. And Stars Above doesn't fail. This cover is more than gorgeous. I love the crown and I love the image of the lightning coming out of it. It also makes me think about plasma globes and I love those too. The crown is also very pretty. It seems like it's make of crystal (or glass). It's an easy cover to love, really. I wonder if the crown belongs to someone and if the stories in this book reveal that someone. I haven't kept up with the series, to my shame, so if that was revealed in the previous books, I'm sorry :P

Stars Above - Marissa Meyer

So, here are the prettiest covers I've seen this week.

I absolutely love this cover. I love the color palette used, first of all. Blues and greens are my favorite combination in the world. I also like that the pages of the book seem to envelop the girl and some pages even seem to float away from the book. And the designs in the pages, they look like waves for the blue pages and leaves for the green ones. I am very curious to see how this cover looks in real life. I also hope there's some embossed elements on the cover.

The Reader - Traci Chee

It's no secret that Gena Showalter has some of the most gorgeous covers out there. This is one of them. I love hourglasses, which is the first thing I noticed when I first saw this cover. But I love how the image of an hourglass is used in this cover to show what it looks like an imminent threat to the beautiful, "heavenly" city, how the chaos and evil from the city from above is slowly enveloping the second city. Reading the blurb makes the cover even more interesting, because now I'm wondering why exactly it's an hourglass. What does it mean?

Obsessed with Covers #27:The Crown's Game, The Cresswell Plot

Y'all know how much I love a pretty cover. I think about...40% of the books that end up on my shelves (be they physical or digital) do so because of the covers. Call me shallow but you have to admit that a pretty, shiny cover will catch your eye faster than a dull, boring one. Two, simple rules that I'll follow:

So, here are the prettiest covers I've seen this week.

I love this cover so much. First, that's a crown and who doesn't love a crown? Second, the crown is tricky, because the image in the front is also in the back, but it's made so that it looks like a shadow. At the same time, the reflection of the "shadow" or the back image is kind of stronger than the reflection of the original castle, so I'm wondering what the cover art is actually trying to show. I want to know how does the cover art relate to the story, so I will be adding this to my growing mountain of TBR.

The Crown's Game - Evelyn Skye

This is an extremely interesting cover. The doll's limbs are twisted in some really weird angles, each kind of pointing towards different directions. Also, they seem way smaller for how big her head is, which makes me wonder if that's not symbolic for that tagline too. I also love the white, pure dress of the doll. I'm all for symbols today, as you can see. I definitely will be checking this book out, because just the cover is making me highly curious about the story.

The Cresswell Plot - Eliza Wass

So, here are the prettiest covers I've seen this week.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22567177-tower-of-thorns

Something you might not know about me is that I love tapestries. There's just something about the details, the colors, the shapes that attracts me. They're my favorite art pieces to see when I go to an art museum. Paintings too, but the tapestries....they're just so, so gorgeous. This cover reminds of that. There's a medieval feeling to it, to the rich colors in the background and the darker tones around the girl. There's a lot going on in this cover that I love, but I can tell you that I really want to see this cover in real life, mostly to see if the cover is just as gorgeous as it is on screen.

Tower of Thorns - Juliet Marillier

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25863014-the-silver-tide

This cover makes me think about ink drawing, which is another art form that I really like. This reminds me of the art classes I had in middle school (aaaaages ago!) and the ways in which to create shadows with just one color. Strangely, I remember that class. I'm babbling, sorry. Anyway, I really love the artistry of this cover and I'd love to have this photo in a frame, somewhere above my shelves, because it is just gorgeous. And since this book is part of a series, I checked out the rest of the books and they have equally gorgeous covers. Guess there's a cover-buy in my near future.

The Silver Tide - Jen Williams

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25890355-paper-and-fire

As was the case with the first cover of the series, the sequel has a gorgeous cover as well. The burnt shape in the middle makes me insanely curious, as I want to see what the dragons are doing or what are they protecting. It also makes me think that they're the ones who breathed fire on whatever it is that was underneath them, to hide some secret. Don't you just love it when a cover of a book tells a story itself? I really have to read this book, because I need to know what those dragons are doing.

Gosh, this is so pretty! *makes heart eyes* I love that pendant! I need something so pretty in my life! And the rippling water is so amazing! The details of the water are just gorgeous. Now that I looked more carefully, the entire series has gorgeous covers. I now need to read this book. Badly.

Immortal - Gillian Shields

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9424367-prized
This is yer another gorgeous cover. I love the swirls on the door. It makes me think of hobbits. And the smoke is great. I love how everything is surrounded by smoke, except the center of the picture. Also, is that another pendant? (If you can't tell already, I'm obsessed with unique jewelry)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11814613-ember
This cover is so simple and so gorgeous. I love that the butterfly is the only thing that is in color, besides the title and the author's name. I love the font used for the title. And the rain drops add to the feeling of mystery that this cover gives me. The butterfly also looks like it has it's own light.

Ember - Carol Oates

I love, love, love this cover. I love the smoky drink/potion, which reminds me of home-made drinks. Then there are the stars in the background. I find it very interesting that the stars are sort of coming out of the potion's smoke. Makes me wonder exactly what does the drink do. Also, there are shadows on the sky surrounding the jar, but again, the jar is lit up. I must own this book based just on the cover.

Down with the Shine - Kare Karyus Quinn

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26075694-ghost-on-the-lake
This cover is gorgeous. If it were a painting, I'd hang it up above my bookshelves. The fact that we're seeing the lake from the bottom is amazing. And I love that the person is looking down. If this is part of a series, I'd love for the next cover to be from the person's perspective, see what they see at the bottom of the lake.

This week's edition of Obsessed With Covers is going to be a bit different. I recently set up an Instagram account and while searching for authors' accounts and pics, I came across the new covers for the Sky Fall trilogy by Shannon Messenger. No one can deny that the original covers for Let The Sky Fall and Let The Storm Break are gorgeous. I personally love them and I really, really need them in my life. However, the new covers are just as pretty. Which is surprising to me, because it takes a lot for me to like new covers. And I'm pretty OCD about series and covers as it is.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13445306-let-the-sky-fallhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13445306-let-the-sky-fall https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22546091-let-the-storm-breakhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22546091-let-the-storm-breakhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17893078-let-the-wind-rise

It's pretty obvious that the cover for the last book in the series is very different from the original ones. In fact, had it not been for the similar title and the author's name, I probably wouldn't even have realized it belongs in the Sky Fall series. HOWEVER, the cover is just as gorgeous. Having read the first two books, I feel like, in a way, the new covers are more fit for the story. But I am now utterly confused. I read the first books on Pulseit, so I don't have to be mad that my covers don't match. Yet. But which ones to get? Forget the fact that the original covers are different for paperbacks, so the gorgeous sepia tones in the LTSF book are missing in the paperback. And apparently, the LTSB paperback has the new cover (or so I found it on the book sites I checked). So ignore for a second the tiny fact that if I want to own the original covers I have to buy *shudders* hardbacks. But the new covers are just as gorgeous. Would it be strange to own both? But then there won't be a second third book to match the original covers (My OCD is strong when it comes to covers for series!). Which makes me sad *pout*

But let's talk about the new covers, right? I love the colors. I love how the pictures hint you to the story itself. I love how it seems as if the covers themselves tell a story. The cover artist did a damn fine job in my opinion in telling the story of the book without giving anything away.

Did you see any great covers this week?

Hey guys! How is this wonderful July treating you? I am in the middle of Hell's main oven, it seems. The heatwave made my poor, old laptop overheat so many times in the last two weeks, I've decided to use it only when I had to. Poor thing.

Anyway, While I'm taking advantage of a little break from the heat, I wanted to share some really beautiful covers I've seen lately.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24804505-forget-tomorrow
I love birds. There's something about them that I just adore. So it's no wonder this cover drew my attention. Not only are there tons of winged creatures in it, the colors are amazing. I love how the big bird is not showing its face. And I love how its the only colored bird, all the other ones being black. It makes me thing that maybe the other birds are parts of the original one.

Forget Tomorrow - Pintip Dunn

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25174874-forest-of-ruin
It's no secret that I love Kelley Armstrong, so I may be biased in my love for this cover. Then again, what is there not to like? There's a massive dragon on it. So I have to love it for that alone. It looks like the dragon is made of snow. And the snowflakes are creating a circle in front of the dragon, which gives me the illusion that maybe the dragon isn't really there, that it's a trick of snow and wind. Either way, I'd love to have this book on my shelf, because my shelf needs prettifying.

Forest of Ruin - Kelley Armstrong

This cover is so gorgeous. It's simple, which makes it even more beautiful. The door makes me wonder what's on the other side and if anyone can go through it. The forest behind it makes me think that maybe there are scary things both behind and in front of that door, that no matter what a character does, sometimes both sides suck. And the sun rays are beautiful too. The perspective seems a little off, maybe a little wrong too, but that adds something to the entire picture. I'd love to read this book, especially after reading the blurb.

Obsessed With Covers #21: Into the Dim, Burning Glass & Reign of Shadows

Y'all know how much I love a pretty cover. I think about...40% of the books that end up on my shelves (be they physical or digital) do so because of the covers. Call me shallow but you have to admit that a pretty, shiny cover will catch your eye faster than a dull, boring one. Two, simple rules that I'll follow:

  • 1, 2 or 3 (no more than 3, though) covers per week;

So, here are the prettiest covers I've seen this week.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23212980-into-the-dim
I discovered this book during last night's Fledgling Authors Twitter chat. I can't help but love this cover! The first thing that I noticed is the snow! *excited monkey* I love snow! And thunders. There's are thunders. And the girl. Am I the only one who sees Bonnie Wright in this photo? Doesn't she look EXACTLY like her?

I also love the infinity symbol used in the title. Oh, and let's not forget about her cape. I love that color! Dark green. It looks almost like emeralds. I love emeralds. Basically I love this cover and it needs to be in my shelf.

Into The Dim - Janet B. Taylor

Is that an amethyst I see? *heart eyes* There's something hauntingly beautiful about this cover. Aside from the amethyst. It's the ashes beneath the jewel, the dust coming out of the necklace. The sparks behind it, that somehow look like fiery stars. And nothing else. It's the fact that in the picture the only thing visible is the lone piece of jewelry that I like most.

Burning Glass - Kathryn Purdie

I don't think I'll ever get tired of covers such as this one. The font used for the title is gorgeous. And the covers are so beautiful. However colorful the cover might be, it gives me the impression of a scary story. Or a scary scene. I look at this and I can imagine one of those panic-inducing instrumental songs movies use to increase the feeling of danger. I really want to see the cover in real life.

Obsessed With Covers #20: Passenger, A Thousand Nights, The Accident Season, These Shallow Graves & A Whole New World

This edition is brought to you by BEA 2015. Heh, that sounded formal, didn't it? I am soooooo sad that I like on another planet continent and I can't go to BEA. It sounds like so much fuuun *sobs**stomps feet like a 5 year old*. Anyway, maybe I'll get the chance to participate in the future. Until then, here are some of the prettiest covers I've seen at BEA (not all, I know, a lot of great covers this year).

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20983362-passenger
It seems that blogging made me admit out loud (or at least in writing) some of my many obsessions. But I'm obsessed with boats in bottles. I love miniatures and bottles with boats are so, so cool. This particular cover is so interesting. It seems like the people on the boat have this unique miniature of a fantasy land with fantasy buildings in a boat. I assume, based on the cover, that the people in the city are imaginary or at least not real for the people living on the boat.

I also love the font used for the title. And how there seems to be light on the city skyline, but a storm brewing for the ship. I really want to read this book to see if the story matches the cover, or at least the feel of it.

Passenger - Alexandra Bracken

I absolutely adore the cover art for this book. It seems as though the tree of life is coming out of an Arabian palace. I love how the crown of the tree is made up of words. I also like the font the artist used. And the girl....what I happening with her? I want to know! I also like how the palace is surrounded by a halo of light, while everything else is covered by darkness.

A Thousand Nights - E. K. Johnston

There's something so scary about this cover. Maybe it's the perspective and the inverted landscape. Of maybe it's because of the girl falling (which I've always been afraid of). Or it could be the storm clouds. Whatever it is, there's something scary about this cover.

I love the colors used for the sky. And the button in the title is so cute. I wonder if it's just a random, art-related reason for it's presence, or if there's something about a button in the story.

The Accident Season - Moïra Fowley-Doyle

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24187925-these-shallow-graves
Where do I start with this cover? The roses are a nice touch, I have to say. It only increases the creepy feeling of the cover. And the hand? Just awesome. Especially when it sits just above the title. Shallow graves and the past? Shallow graves indeed. What's behind the wood panels is the detail that I like most. Just a hint of something that's hiding there. They could be other roses, or there could be more. I just love the cover.

These Shallow Graves - Jennifer Donnelly

The 8 year old in me is doing happy dances at the sight of this cover and title. I can't wait to see how this book is. The cover is just amazing. If the Agrabah palace was real, this is how it would look like to me. The colors used for the skyline just increases that magical feeling of the entire building. And the girl, which I assume is Jasmine, makes the story seem more real. I will definitely read this book once it comes out. And the title is just genius, because, based on the blurb, it takes a whooooole new meaning. If I had anyone sing the song in a completely new version, I'd had Lana Del Rey do it, because no one can make a Disney song sound more haunted than her.
