It's been a hot minute since I last read a Felicity Heaton book and it was time I corrected that. I also felt like it was time for a good paranormal story, and when I got the chance to join the blog tour I did so happily and as quick as I could. The world of the Eternal Mates gets bigger and bigger and I'm very happy for that. As I expected, this book was just as good as I could have hoped for.
Emelia was such a great character! She's been through a really traumatic experience and in the beginning of this book you can see her struggling to not be scared and afraid of everything. I really felt for her in those first chapters to be honest. Then as the book went on you could see her starting to become stronger, to use her rage at what happened to her to become stronger and to want to get her life back. It was truly fantastic to see. I love how she at one point expresses how she'd rather work out than talk about what happened to her in captivity, how working out and going a few rounds on the punching bag were her form of therapy. Therapy is a lot of things for a lot of people, and she wasn't comfortable talking about what had happened, so channeling all that anger, shame and fear in a way that helped her is something I loved seeing.
The Fourth Commander was a very intriguing character. He doesn't have a name, he has a title, so that makes him stand out from the very first moment I met him. I think this book may have one of the most memorable first chapter just because of that. I love how he struggled between duty and what he felt he needed to do for Emelia. Like I said, the fact that he doesn't have a name made him that much more interesting. And it was funny seeing Emelia try to come up with a cool name for him.
This is my second book in the series that I've read, so I know I'm missing a few details and I'm not seeing the full picture and what the things that unfold in this book mean for the entire world of the Eternal Mates. That being said, this author has a way with words and she made me feel like even though I didn't know the past events I didn't have to fear being lost or confused. I never wondered what was going on and I definitely never felt lost. Which is really impressive when you're reading the sixteenth book in a series, let me tell you.
The pacing was great, which I loved, and there was never a dull moment. I loved the tender moments between Emelia and the Fourth Commander, as well as the more action packed moments. I'm going to be reading this series from the very start very soon, because I'm truly in love with the world building.
All in all a great book and one you should definitely read if you're an avid fan of paranormal romances.
Duty should mean everything to the Fourth Commander of the Echelon angels. It did before he met her. Now, the only demon he wants to slay is the one that haunts the enchanting mortal huntress, and the temptation to hunt him in Hell, a realm that might kill him, is becoming impossible to resist.*Disclaimer: I received an eARC of this book from Felicity Heaton in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my rating or the content of my review in any way.
Held captive by a dragon shifter in Hell, Emelia survived a torment that changed her in ways she hates. She wants her strength back. Her life back. To do that, she needs closure. To get that, she might have to trust not only a man again, but an immortal.
But when the price of vengeance is the soul of the angel bringing her back to life, will Emelia be willing to pay it?
