A look into the life at McKay-Taggart on the day Charlie and Ian have their babies.

a Masters & Mercenaries extra
This book is a short short, but I was as always when it comes to Ian and Charlie, INSANELY happy to read about their new adventures.

Also we get to see Ian scared. He may not admit that he's scared, but he's scared of the fact that he has not one, but TWO newborn daughters. And if you're not new to this series, you know that Ian and Charlie's daughters are scary awesome.

A man who gave up on love

Mitch Bradford is an intimidating man. In his professional life, he has a reputation for demolishing his opponents in the courtroom. At the exclusive BDSM club Sanctum, he prefers disciplining pretty submissives with no strings attached. In his line of work, there’s no time for a healthy relationship. After a few failed attempts, he knows he’s not good for any woman—especially not his best friend’s sister.

A woman who always gets what she wants

Laurel Daley knows what she wants, and her sights are set on Mitch. He’s smart and sexy, and it doesn’t matter that he’s a few years older and has a couple of bitter ex-wives. Watching him in action at work and at play, she knows he just needs a little polish to make some woman the perfect lover. She intends to be that woman, but first she has to show him how good it could be.

A killer lurking in the shadows

When an unexpected turn of events throws the two together, Mitch and Laurel are confronted with the perfect opportunity to explore their mutual desire. Night after night of being close breaks down Mitch’s defenses. The more he sees of Laurel, the more he knows he wants her. Unfortunately, someone else has their eyes on Laurel and they have murder in mind.
This is actually a reread for me. I finally got to reread the book that started my obsession with Lexi Blake's Masters and Mercenaries series. You can read my original review here. My reading experience changed, because now I know what the characters are referencing in the epilogue of this book, and I feel their pain much more than I did when I first read this book.

A man who lost his future…

Macon Miles knows what it means to make sacrifices for his country. Married to his high school sweetheart, he once had a promising future in the military and everything seemed complete. All that changed when a routine patrol in Afghanistan turned into a nightmare. When the dust settled, Macon had lost his career, his wife, and his leg. Lost and alone, his only comfort comes from his newfound love of cooking. When his estranged brother, Adam, offers him a new home and a chance to work at a friend’s restaurant in Dallas, it’s an offer he can’t refuse.

A woman searching for the past…

Allyson Jones made her foster mother a deathbed promise. She would find out what really happened to Ronnie in Afghanistan. Ally doesn’t believe the Army’s reports about her foster brother’s death, and she knows only one man can tell her what really happened—Macon Miles. Following him to Dallas, she gets a job working alongside him at Top, Sean Taggart’s decadent new restaurant. She is sure Macon is hiding something about Ronnie’s death, and she’ll do whatever it takes to unravel the mystery.

When circumstances force Macon and Ally together, their chemistry is hotter than any dish at Top. But when Ally’s deception is exposed and the truth about Ronnie’s death is revealed, will they be able to reclaim the love they’ve lost?

I was blown away by this story. We get to meet another member of the Miles family. In case you don't know why this is important (!!!) Macon is Adam's younger brother. I felt so sorry for Macon. His ex was an idiot, his other older brother is an even bigger idiot, and to top it all off Macon really hits the bottle hard. I felt for him, like I said. Adam helps him find a job at Top, Sean Taggart's restaurant.

Allyson was a sweet girl, just trying to keep her promise to a woman that meant a lot for her. She needed to find out what happened to her foster brother, while also trying not to fall for Macon.

The story is sweet and while I wanted to slap Adam, I know that what he did he did out of love for his little brother. This book also is serves as a series started for the Topped spin-off series of Masters and Mercenaries. I'm obsessed with restaurants ever since I worked in a cooking school, so any chance I get to read more about the industry is one I'll jump on immediately.

As always with any Lexi Blake book, I'm excited to see what happens next, especially since I'm getting very close to having read all the books so far in this world, which evidently will call for a reread until the new book is out (and by the way, I'm very, VERY excited for Tucker's story). Until then, happy reading my fellow bookworms!
