Blurb (from Goodreads):

From NYT bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan, comes a brand new series where second chances don’t come often, and overcoming an unexpected loss means breaking everything you knew.>

I fell for Cameron Connolly at the wrong time. And when he left, I thought my life was over. But then, after the worst happened, I truly understood what that phrase meant. Now, he’s not ready for a second chance, and I’m not offering one. Though given that our families have been forced together after losing one of our own, I know there’s no turning back. Not this time. Not again. Not when it comes to Cameron.

I never wanted to hurt Violet Knight, but there were reasons I had to leave all those years ago—not that she'd believe me if I told her what they were. I not only left her, I also left my foster brothers. Honestly, I didn’t want to come back to Denver to help run my father’s failing brewery. But when it comes to my brothers, I know I’ll find a way to make it work. Perhaps I’ll even earn Violet’s forgiveness and face the connection we both thought long forgotten in the process. Because I wanted her then, but now I know I need her. I just hope she needs me.

***Trigger Warnings: suicide, depression

Carrie Ann Ryan does it again, guys! I had been mentally preparing myself for leaving the world of the Montgomery Ink series this book comes along and shows me that not only are there more stories to tell, they are also incredibly important.

I read this book while I was on a huge true crime documentaries kick, which may have influenced a little bit the way I read it, and I swear I wasn't planning on it happening that way, but I am so happy it did.

I don't think I've ever read a book that dealt with what happens after something tragic occurs, how the people that are left behind rebuild their lives, how they deal with grief, how they put their lives back together. I definitely never read about how people deal with the suicide of a dear friend and family member.  Breaking Without You is more than just a second chance romance, it's about dealing with grief and living, making it to the next day, accepting that someone you loved didn't win the battle against their own demons.

I loved seeing how the author showed not just the various stages of grief, but how she proved that those stages aren't linear. Oftentimes I see grief be talked about like it's a 5-step program that follows a plan, and I cannot tell you how frustrating that is to me. Grief is different for a lot of people, and much like how it happened in this book, you won't have the same intensity or the same pacing for everyone.

Violet was a great heroine, and I loved that she didn't immediately forgive Cameron. She's fighting her own grief and her own demons, her own guilt when it comes to her best friend. I really liked her, she was really strong and brave.

Cameron was an interesting character to figure out. There's a lot of anger inside of him, and it took me a while to figure out if he was more angry at himself or at his brothers. I really respect him for what he did for his mother and his little brother, and even though I understood his twin, I also can't help but really respect Cameron's decisions. I do think his way of breaking things off with Violet the first time was wrong, and I did enjoy seeing Violet give him a hard time because of that and not forgiving him right away.

I always love when this world gets bigger and bigger, and every new story Ryan adds makes me more invested and more in love with these characters, and I'm curious to learn more about Brendan and Aiden, Cameron's brothers, as well as Sienna and Harmony, Violet's friends. I'm also curious to see what secrets they each hide. I am also very curious to see how Dillon's future will turn out, because I really fell in love with that kid.

All in all, a great start to a new series, and I am very excited to see what happens next.
