Gena Showalter has crafted yet another amazing story in her ongoing paranormal romance series, full of intrigue, love, betrayal, action, drama, sass, hurt, and more. Basically this is like a starred meal or something, just the kind of story I needed.
The Darkest Assassin is the story of Fox and Bjorn, and believe me when I say this story went to some places I did not expect. I had hopes that it would go there, but I wasn't sure it would. Let me back up a little though.
Fox is the keeper of Distrust, and that lands her in some sticky situations. The demon living inside her makes it impossible for her to trust anyone, and for her it's a losing battle. Or at least that's how the book starts, which I always love in a story. The more I kept reading, the more Fox's character intrigued me. While she appeared as strong, sassy, a true warrior, it wasn't until Bjorn sees a memory of hers from childhood that I truly saw Fox. Since this is a novella, we only get a few glimpses into her past, but she didn't have it easy. Not one bit.
As much as I love Showalter's female characters however, I was most intrigued by Bjorn. Bjorn is tasked with killing Fox in retaliation for what she did at the very beginning of the story, yet something keeps him from doing it. They fight like cats and dogs, but he can't kill her just yet. He's intrigued by her, and then something happens and even though she didn't have to, even though she could have used his weakness to escape, she saved his life. I enjoyed reading about Bjorn, learning about his past. What truly shocked me, because it happened just like a dark part of me hoped, was something that Bjorn did towards the end. It was heartbreaking, but also really bold as far as story telling goes. I hope there's going to be a lot of groveling in his future, but all in all I was satisfied with their story.
We caught a glimpse of William in this book and I was very intrigued. I still don't know a lot about this world, since I haven't managed yet to catch up on the series like I had planned to, but I'm sensing some big changes coming in the future.
The book was really fast paced and intense, and I really enjoyed reading it. I am definitely curious about what happens next. I am VERY curious about William's book!
