Blog Tour Book Review & Playlist: The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik by David Arnold

Author: David Arnold
Series: N/A
Audience: +16
Genre: YA, Contemporary
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Release Date: May 22nd 2018
My Rating: 4 Cups
Source: Publisher
Blurb (from Goodreads):
“An epic wonder”* from the bestselling author of Mosquitoland

This is Noah Oakman → sixteen, Bowie believer, concise historian, disillusioned swimmer, son, brother, friend.

Then Noah → gets hypnotized.

Now Noah → sees changes: his mother has a scar on her face that wasn’t there before; his old dog, who once walked with a limp, is suddenly lithe; his best friend, a lifelong DC Comics disciple, now rotates in the Marvel universe. Subtle behaviors, bits of history, plans for the future—everything in Noah’s world has been rewritten. Everything except his Strange Fascinations . . .

A stunning surrealist portrait, The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik is a story about all the ways we hurt our friends without knowing it, and all the ways they stick around to save us.

*Adam Silvera, bestselling author of More Happy Than Not and They Both Die at the End
*Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my rating or the content of my review in any way.

Sunday Book Soundtrack #20: Firstlife by Gena Showalter

Photobucket

Sunday Book Soundtrack is a weekly feature at Ruby's Books, where I share some of my bookish soundtracks. Since I discovered my passion for reading years ago, I've discovered that more and more of the songs I loved remind me of certain books. So I thought I'd share my playlists with you. If you want to listen to the songs, I'll post a link to a Youtube videos for each and every title. No copyright infringement intended! I'll try to find the official videos for each song. There's no set number for each playlist, sometimes I might have 10, sometimes 5, sometimes if I'm one of my moods I'll have 15. If you want to read more about this feature, click the "show more" button below.

Hey guys! I've discovered the magical place called Spotify, which means I get to make bookish playlists so much easier. I'm also thinking about uploading my old Sunday Book Soundtrack playlists there soom. Thank you Kara @ Great Imaginations to recommend it to me *sends hugs and kisses*

This week's playlist is inspired by Firstlife by Gena Showalter. I loved this book so much and I had fun creating this playlist. I hope you enjoy it. Also, if you want to check out my review, click here.

  1. Song For Someone - U2 - I think this song fits Richard and Sylvie perfectly. The entire story actually could be represented by this song.
  2. Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side
  3. Birdy - Skinny Love
  4. Elton John - Your Song

  1. Meghan Trainor - All About that Bass - When I think about Violet this song pops into my head.
  2. Little Big Town - Girl Crush
  3. RaeLynn - Boyfriend - This song fits so well with basically any of Gabe's ex-girlfriends. Violet knew Gabe since they were kids, so they went through a lot together. Not only that but she really did see girls come and go all the time.
  4. Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman -This is another song that fits Violet so, so well in my opinion.

Sunday Book Soundtrack #16: Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hey guys! It's been a while since I've done one of these lists. I have inspiration right now. This is mostly because having no internet for a while forced me to listen to the radio more than I usually did.

This week's book soundtrack is for Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18296030-don-t-look-back

I loved this book so, so much. I will write a review soon, but I had to say that I loved it. Unlike my usual soundtracks, this book didn't give me the impression that rock music was good for it. Which I know, shocking, right? That is why the songs I've picked are so different than my previous choices. Anyway, here's the soundtrack:
  1. The Pierces - Secret - I just couldn't not include this song on the playlist.
  2. The Pierces - Boring - I picked this song for two reasons: the flashbacks and the way "old" Samantha & crew are described.
  3. Ke$ha - Die Young - This song fits with the image of Sam, the party girl. At least it does in my head.
  4. The Chainsmokers - #SELFIE - The lyrics fit with the meanness of Sam's old friends and even Sam herself. And the sound of this song fits with old Sam.
  5. Natalia Kills - Problem (Explicit) - This song fits both Samantha and Cassie. I'm not sure which girl is described better by this song. There's a little bit of Cassie in there, but if you've read the book, you know that Samantha wasn't necessarily a good girl in the past, either.
  6. Indila - Dernière Danse - The feel of this song fits Samantha as she's struggling with not having any memories. And even the lyrics fit, in a more symbolic way.

Oh, I'm so happy there are other covers for this book. This cover, the Australian (and New Zealand I think) version is amazing! She's Asian, she has gorgeous red eyes, she could be Allie for all I know :P

  1. Metallica - Nothing Else Matters - Not a big Metallica fan, but this song is perfect for Allie!
  2. Paramore - The Only Exception - Again, good song for Allie
  3. Evanescence - Sweet Sacrifice
  4. Eminem - Sing For The Moment - This song has a great combination of pain, anger, suffering and confusion, the same combo I sometimes feel Allie has.
  5. Jen Titus - Oh Death - If you're a fan of the Supernatural TV show then you probably heard this song before. If not, listen to it. It's creepy and so good. And it fits with the world in this series in my opinion (both the sound and the lyrics).

I know I said it in my review, but I need to say it again: I loved this book. I really, really did. So much in fact that I really couldn't wait to share this soundtrack with you. About the soundtrack: I won't give you any hints on what made me think a certain song was perfect for a certain scene. Here's my list (will tell you more after I share the songs :D ):

  1. Kenny Chesney - Shiftwork
  2. Kenny Chesney - No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems
  3. Taylor Swift - Our Song
  4. Kacey Musgraves - Undermine (feat. Trent Dabbs)
  5. Lady Antebellum - Dancing Away With My Heart
Now. In case you think your eyes are working wrong, they're not. Yes, the list is made only by country songs. Yes, I do listen to other genres than rock (plus, I love country music) *gasp* LOL. Anyways, I hope you read this book and I hope you liked my playlist.

Happy reading (and listening)!

  1. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog - I believe this song is perfect for when Travis is fighting :D
  2. Lenny Kravitz - American Woman
  3. Marilyn Manson - mOBSCENE
  4. Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
  5. Motley Crue - New Tattoo
  6. Maroon 5 - Daylight (I just heard this version of the song today and I think it's perfect for Beautiful Disaster)

  1. Kid Rock - So Hott
  2. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Jambalaya - This is the song I think fits the Pork Pit. For some reason, whenever I picture that bar, I hear this song.
  3. Evanescence - Call Me When You're Sober
  4. Nickelback - Burn It To The Ground
  5. Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare

  1. Eagles - Doolin Dalton
  2. Hoobastank - The Reason - I believe Rose and Dimitri found their "reasons" in each other.
  3. Shinedown - Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide - For Rose and Christian in a certain scene where I believe they were an amazing team
  4. Poets of the Fall - Locking up the Sun - Can't really say much, because it would be a major spoiler. I'll just say ghost and that's that. Read the book if you want to know more :P
  5. Prince - Purple Rain
  6. Lenny Kravitz - I'll be waiting - Adrian. If you've read the book, you should know what scene I'm talking about.
  7. Chris Rea - Road to Hell - When Rose leaves school to search for Dimitri. I think it's the best way to describe that scene.

As you know, last year I finally gave in and started reading this series. I'm soon going to read the third book (I think these first 2 months will not be full of reading due to my mad schedule *pout*).

Here's the playlist for this book:

  1. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Put A Spell On You
  2. Cat Stevens - Wild World
  3. Sully Erna - Broken Road
  4. Melanie C - Never Be The Same Again
  5. Rolling Stones - She's a Rainbow

This week's book soundtrack is Rogue Rider by Larissa Ione (read my review here). I thought since this book was just released that it would be a good idea to publish my soundtrack for it sooner rather than later. That and the fact that I've had a really boring class last week helped :D (But shhh, don't tell on me, okay? I need to look like an innocent, responsible student *snort*)

  1. Sully Erna - Sinner's Prayer - I just discovered this album (I have no idea what took me so long) but the moment I heard the lyrics I thought this song was perfect for Reseph. Especially the part with "Heaven's closed for what I've done"
  2. The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You - The only thing I can say without giving away too much is that there's this scene with Reseph and Jillian in the bathroom (nothing sexual or hot in that scene, trust me) and the scene right after that and for some reason this song popped into my head.
  3. Brad Paisley & Keith Urban - Start a Band - I can't say why. But there's a very good reason for this song, trust me :D
  4. Shinedown - Cry for Help
  5. Cher - Turn Back Time - Now, you might ask how is it this song fits here. This one is for Reseph too. But I can't say more. Sowwy!
  6. Maroon 5 - One More Night - Again, can't say why. If you've read the book (or when you will read the book) you know (or will know) why.

This week's book soundtrack is for Frostbite by Richelle Mead (read my review here)

  1. Adele - One and Only - This song reminded me of Rose and Dimitri. But especially Rose. Can't say more because that will be spoiler-ish for those of you who haven't read the book.
  2. The Beatles - Yesterday - I can't say why I put this song on the list, because that would be a major spoiler. But I feel that it's perfect for a specific scene in the book.
  3. The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star - If you've read the book, you know why this song ended up here. Though it wouldn't be my favorite choice for that scene, I can't think of a better one. That and I really like the song.
  4. Roxette - How Do You Do
  5. Big Mama Thorton - Hound Dog - This is for Adrian. I just couldn't help it. I see this song as his ultimate theme song, at least for Adrian as we know him in Vampire Academy. We'll see if I change my mind after I read the Bloodlines series (judging only by the first two books, I'd be tempted to change the song. Not yet though, I'm still waiting to see what he has planned next :D )

This week's book soundtrack is Blade Song by J. C. Daniels (read my review here)

  1. Godsmack - Voodoo - This song seems perfect for Kit for some reason. Not just Kit, but her sword also. Plus, I love the drums in this song :D Intoxicating (in a very good way)
  2. Davit Guetta - Titanium - I know, it has nothing to do with the previous song. But I love Titanium. And it reminds me of Kit in a way.
  3. The Kills - Sour Cherry
  4. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising - I really don't need a reason to put this song on this particular playlist. I love their music and Bad Moon Rising is like...let's just say everytime I read about a shifter or were-creature I hear this song :D
  5. Skid Row - Monkey Business - Spoilers, so I won't say why :P
  6. Nickelback - Side of the Bullet - Fighting scene. And I love the guitar :D

This week's book soundtrack is for Sweet Evil. Before you ask, no, I didn't plan to do two soundtracks for YA books in a row, but, to be fair, with all the Bloggiesta weekend I completely forgot to dig out my other lists *blushes**is sorry* I promise I'll have an adult book for next week's soundtrack :D

Back to my soundtrack though. If you want to read my review for Sweet Evil, click here.

  1. Roxette - Dressed for Success - Does it have a direct connection to Anna and Kai? No. But, to be honest, Roxette is my favorite band since my childhood. And for some reason, this song reminds me of Anna in a way.
  2. Matchbox 20 - If You're Gone - This just seemed the perfect song for the very last scene. I'm sure this song would be the same if that scene was told from Kai's perspective.
  3. Kenny Chesney ft. Grace Potter - You & Tequila - If I say why I think this song is perfect for Kai and Anna, it would be a spoiler. Just know that I do believe it's perfect :D
  4. Nickelback - Fight for all the wrong reasons - Oh well. I can't say this one either, sorry :D
  5. Coldplay - Spies - This has nothing to do with the lyrics, but the sound of the song if that makes sense. Anyway, it did to me LOL
  6. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama - This one is spoiler-ish too. Oops
So, this is this week's soundtrack. I hope you liked it ;) Have fun for what's left of this weekend :D
